Our Vision and Philosophy
Our Vision is:
Women of the Hunter will have the best possible physical, emotional,
psychological and spiritual wellbeing.
The services delivered by the Hunter Women's Centre, and its guiding
philosophy have been shaped by the women’s movement, the women’s
health movement and continue to be informed by what women are saying
today.
The Centre puts feminist ideals of equality, respect, participation
and having a women-focus into practice with staff members and the
women who attend the centre.
Although the Hunter Women’s Centre provides services within
an evolving feminist philosophy women do not need to identify themselves
as a feminist to be welcome at the Hunter Women’s Centre or
to find benefit in our services.
Some of the Centre’s guiding principles that affect all of
our work include:
- Recognition of the impact of
social, environmental, economic, physical, emotional and cultural
factors on a woman’s health and well being.
- Acknowledging the various and
changing roles and responsibilities of a woman throughout her
life.
- Valuing women’s own knowledge
and skills and their right to make informed decisions about their
health.
- Recognition of the importance
of maintaining health and well being by focussing on preventative
practices.
- Actively encouraging the empowerment
of women in both the personal and social aspects of their lives.
- Recognising and challenging
the effects of sex-role stereotyping and gender discrimination
on women’s health and well being.
