Protect Your Privacy Online

At the Hunter Women’s Centre we have a strong policy of confidentiality and we understand the importance of protecting your privacy.

Maintaining you privacy online can be difficult so we’ve outlined how you can make sure websites that you have visited cannot be traced by other people using the same computer as you.

Anyone who uses your computer is able to find out some of the websites you have visited by clicking on the right-hand arrow of the address box in Internet Explorer. They can also look at the Temporary Internet File folder to see what sites you have visited.

A note of warning, it may look a bit suspicious if all your Internet site visiting history is deleted. If you are worried about someone tracing your tracks then it may be worthwhile visiting a few other sites after you have deleted your Internet history.

To delete your Internet history follow the instructions for the type of browser you have been using as outlined below:

Internet Explorer users:

1. Open the VIEW menu
2. Select INTERNET OPTIONS
3. Choose the GENERAL tab at the top
4. In the section marked ‘Temporary Internet Files’ click on ‘Delete Files’ to delete these files
5. On the same screen go to the section marked ‘History’, click on the ‘Clear History’ button to erase these files

Mozilla Firefox users:

1. Open the TOOLS menu
2. Select OPTIONS
3. Choose the PRIVACY tab at the top
4. In the section marked ‘Cache,’ click on the ‘Clear Cache Now,’ now click the ‘OK’ button to delete these files
5. On the same screen, in the section marked ‘History,’ click on the ‘Clear’ button to erase these files

Netscape Navigator users:

1. Open the EDIT menu
2. Select PREFERENCES
3. Select ADVANCED
4. Then select CACHE
5. Now choose ‘Clear Memory Cache’ and ‘Clear Disk Cache.’ Click on each of these and then click ‘OK’
6. Next select the EDIT menu again
